Thursday was a big day for Michelle Obama. The First Lady celebrated her 49th birthday, officially joined Twitter, and—the biggest news of all!—debuted new bangs.
She first revealed her new hairstyle in a picture attached to her second tweet. Seen in a Zac Posen dress, Mrs. Obama is chatting with the co-chair of her MLK Day of Service committee.
These aren’t the kind of subtle, side-swept bangs that some women favor, including Duchess Kate. Rather, Mrs. Obama opted for full-on, forehead-covering fringe. It’s a bold move at a high profile time for the First Lady, just days before President Obama’s inauguration.
Her new look took Twitter by storm. “Breaking: @FLOTUS has bangs” tweeted the Daily Beast. Designer Nanette Lepore tweeted Mrs. Obama birthday wishes, along with “love the new bangs ” Jane Larkworthy, the beauty director at W Magazine, tweeted that she has gotten more emails about the first lady’s new bangs than about recent red carpet looks.
Mrs. Obama’s new look comes on the heels of recent chops by other celebrities. Kerry Washington rocked blunt bangs on the Golden Globes red carpet earlier this week. Jennifer Lopez is on the cover of this week’s People magazine with long, blunt bangs. Reality star Kim Kardashian has been teasing her Twitter followers with the idea of bangs for more than a month now. In December, she tweeted about bangs but later revealed it was just a clipped-on hair piece. Earlier this week, she posted another photo, this time with real bangs of the side-swept variety.
Anyone considering the look should take note: bangs are not a low-maintenance hairstyle. Most types of fringe require constant trimming to ensure they hit just the right spot on the face. And hair that is textured or curly often requires constant straightening so that the bangs lay properly.

P.S: I think she looked better with the side bang. I really don’t understand why a lot of people are making such a big deal about it.
